This is an ever-evolving collection of our favorite adventure routes in the Northwoods. Routes range in intensity and terrain, from easy day trips, to week-long paddling expeditions, and designated by activity and season. All are supported with gear and logistics by the River's Edge Crew.

Turtle Flambeau SCENIC WATERS AREA

Undisturbed, wooded shorelines and islands offer the opportunity to boat, camp, fish and enjoy the outdoors in wild and rugged northern Wisconsin. Spread across 40,000 acres in Iron County, the Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Waters Area offers 66 remote campsites accessible by water only.

NORTH HIGHLAND AMERICAN LEGION STATE FOREST CANOE ROUTE

Paddle trips in the North Highland American Legion State Forest, including the Manitowish Chain of Lakes and area rivers. Many can be connected for extended canoe or kayak expeditions. Trip distances and portages included. Campsites are marked where available.

Enjoy hiking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing and wildlife watching along this 12-mile trail system. Trails are OPEN TO EVERYONE, from dawn to dusk. The terrain is gentle and winds through the woods, along the lake, bog and nearby Manitowish River allowing you to explore a variety of habitats each with their own unique plants and animals. In the winter, trails are tracked for classic skiing. (In winter, leashed dogs allowed on snowshoe trail only.)

Minocqua Winter Park is one of the most popular XC Ski Centers in the Midwest.  86 kilometers (54 miles) of impeccably groomed xc trails wind through 6500 acres of peaceful northern upland forest.  Over 45 km of trails are protected forever with conservation easements.

In addition to cross country skiing, Minocqua Winter Park provides 10 miles of snowhoe trails, multi-use fat bike trails, an ice skating pond, snow tubing, trailside warming shelters and fire pits, a Tea House, and a full schedule of activities and programs for the whole family. The park is also  home to the Minocqua Winter Park Ski Shop which offers lessons, ski and snowshoe rentals, and a pro shop for all your winter sport needs.

mecca trails

With 21 kilometers (13 miles) of trails, MECCA should be required recreation any time you're in the Northwoods. Designed for hiking, snowshoeing and XC skiing, the trails include groomed cross-country ski trails with track set for classic skiers and a groomed skate lane.  

 

The diverse terrain was created by glaciers thousands of years ago, and includes stands of hemlocks, pines, hardwood uplands of maple and oaks, and wetlands of black spruce, cedars, and tamarack.  The trails have great views at the Little Turtle Wildlife Area.

LAMBO zip trail, shannon lake, raven trail

A fantastic mix of hiking, snowshoeing and biking trails right here in the Northwoods, developed and maintained professionally by the Lakeland Area Mountain Biking Organization (LAMBO).

 

For MTB and fat biking, the trail systems include groomed single-track and flow trails that are all designed to provide bikers of all skill levels a fun an challenging ride.

The terrain on the Shannon Lake Trail is gently rolling with a variety of timber types. The loop around Shannon Lake is especially scenic.

 

Located in Minocqua, Woodruff and St. Germain.

WINMAN TRAILS

Arguably one of the best trail systems in the Midwest, WInMan Trails boasts over 14 miles of flow trails, jumps, a pump track, and just unfettered awesomeness. Winter adds groomed trails for XC skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking. A must do in the Northwoods, heck you should actually just plan your trip around riding these trails.

The 400-acre parcel has more than 1 1/2 miles of shoreline. Its forested stand represents a rare remnant of the northern hardwood–hemlock forest, once the largest and most characteristic of northern WI. It retains many of the characteristics of old-growth forests, such as large live trees, snags, and fallen trees on land and water. It houses eagle and loon nests, includes sightings of birds such as Scarlet Tanager and Blackburnian Warbler, houses a plethora of vernal pools and wetlands for exploration, and features a unique array of glacial moraines.

nordic Trails

Wolverine Nordic Ski Trails in Ironwood, MI offers 24K of ski trails including several loops for classic striding and skate skiing. There are 14K of marked snowshoe trails and 7K of snow bike trails.

Lake Effect snow provides the area with snow that tends to arrive earlier, pile deeper, and last longer than anywhere else in the Midwest. The rolling terrain offers trails for all levels of skiing, snowshoeing, and snow biking. Visit the Wolverine site for current conditions.

$10 trail donation is recommended.

The Washburn Non-Motorized Trail System consists of approximately 12 miles (19 km) of groomed ski trail and 6 miles (10 km) of single track bike - snowshoe trail. There is a warming shelter with restrooms and parking located on County Park Rd. at Perch Lake. The Washburn Trail System is located approximately 6 miles west of Rhinelander, WI.

A $5 day pass is required for all persons 18 and older.

The Enterprise County Forest Winter Recreation Trail consists of two one-way loops that together equal approximately 8 miles. The trail is groomed fat-tire biking, however, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also permitted on the trail. Beginner to intermediate. The trail is located approximately 8 miles south of Hwy 8 on Co. Hwy G in Oneida County.

A $5 day pass is required for all persons 18 and older.

FLAMBEAU RIVER

Turtle-Flambeau SWA to Chippewa River

Price and Rusk counties are home to the majority of the river’s course. As the Flambeau River passes through these counties, the river shows an amazing array of moods — from whitewater rapids to slow, gentle curves and pools. There is a stretch for every paddler — young and old, and beginner to expert. This is the best river paddle in all of northern Wisconsin.

The maps and guides below will help you plan your trip. The River Map includes routes for the entire length of the river along with recommendations for camping and accommodations.

Located 19.8 miles northwest of the Crystal Lake Visitor Station and campground in the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest, this 835-acre lake is known for excellent fishing of walleye, musky and smallmouth bass, and has a boat landing for campers. The campground also offers an open beach area and bathrooms. Lake sites offer wonderful views from the campground on the northwest corner of the lake. Short ride to the Heart of Vilas Bike Trail.

CAMPGROUND

CLEAR LAKE CAMPGROUND

Clear Lake Campground is a popular modern family campground located in the southern portion of the Northern Highland American Legion (NHAL) forest near Woodruff. It is on the southwest corner of Clear Lake and shares the lake with an additional picnic and beach area on the north side of the lake. This 846-acre exceptionally clear lake provides excellent boating and good fishing. This campground has a large sandy beach with a marked swimming area. Clear Lake Campground is the only campground in the NHAL that offers plowed campsites for winter camping.

Close to fat bike, MTB, XC ski and snowshoe trails.
